Snowshoeing in New Hampshire

We offer custom guided winter tours November/December through April/May.--see also: Hiking & X-C Skiing.

Guided winter hikes are fun!

Family picnic while snowshoeing near Squam Lake

Hiking in winter is possible and we'll lead you on the best hikes in New Hampshire for this time of year. Snowshoes or ice grippers for your boots May be provided for trail walking below treeline. There are excellent trails for half-day treks for tots (we have a toddler backpack carrier to rent), day trips, and multi-day winter camping trips for those daring to try sleeping in a tent or lean-to. You can also opt to join Lucie for a day and stay at a cozy bed and breakfast at night where you can sit by a fireplace, enjoy a hot tub, and be pampered with a spa experience. Anything is possible.

Deep Woods Fresh Air

On a guided winter hike you will find the weather is cool and crisp and sometimes it is snowing or raining, which you don't mind with proper clothing. When the ground is white, you'll notice everything else in detail...tree bark with green moss, birds, exposed granite rocks, ice flows and winter waterfalls. The best part is discovering the tracks and movement patterns of animals through the snow. Your guide will talk about the natural and cultural history of the area and there's always a chance of seeing wildlife.

SurvivalSnowshoeing the Great North WoodsYour knowledge about North Woods natural environments can be enhanced by incorporating survival lessons into your guided hike. Even though New Hampshire doesn't have many dangerous animals, there are a number of hazards which every hiker should be made aware. Recognition of hypothermia and incoming storms are a couple of examples. Learning about such hazards, as well as the skills and tools to keep yourself healthy and staying found, will help you enjoy future hikes.

ExpeditionLucie guiding a snowshoe hike on Mount Cardigan.Whether you want a guided half-day nature tour or a multi-day expedition, you'll have an unforgettable experience in New Hampshire's wilderness!

As a rule, the longer your trip, the more you get out of it. You'll get better at organizing your backpack, see more wildlife, and increase your fitness level. If it's your first time winter backpacking, in any season, you may want to try an over-nighter (2 days and 1 night) to test your equipment and try it out.

Winter hiking view from Applachian TrailLucie will provide you with a suggested list of things to bring so you will be prepared for any type of weather. The most important things on that list are winter hiking boots (insulated/waterproof) and a backpack. Both need to be the correct fit and durable enough to carry your load. For multi-day trips, you will also need your own sleeping bag and pad. We rent snowshoes and some packs. Rental packs and sleeping bags may also be available at your local sports store.
