(Booking deadline July 18--only 3 spaces left!) DESCRIPTION Earn your bragging rights by traversing through some of the most remote parts of New Hampshire. In the Great North Woods, we will follow the Cohos Trail southbound from the Canadian border to trek through the wild Connecticut Lakes area and one of New Hampshire’s most majestic notches. We’ll climb through boreal forests, ford mountain streams, and relax in wide open alpine gardens with panoramic views. Spot moose, loons, eagles, pine marten, spruce grouse, boreal chickadee, and Canada jay. See mountain views, rocky cliffs, waterfalls, beaver dams, and so much more. Are you fit? Participants will carry a 45-pound backpack and hike mountains and valleys very vigorously for two 5-day stretches with a layover night in between. Also includes first and last night’s lodging. Day 1 - Arrive between 3 and 5PM in Gorham, NH. Day 2-6 – Backpacking 5 days with remote camping 4 nights, shuttle back to lodging. Night 6 – Layover night at lodging in town with time to do laundry, resupply, repack, and relax. Day 7-11 - Backpacking 5 days with remote camping 4 nights, shuttle back to lodging. Night 11 – Last night’s lodging. Day 12 – Breakfast and departure. DETAILS Difficulty/Fitness Rating: Very vigorous: Expect a solid level of aerobic intensity throughout the days. Backpack Weight: 35-45 pounds Daily Hiking Distances/Times: 6-17 miles (6-10 hours) Most Elevation Gain in a day: 300-3,776 feet Quality of Trails: Mostly well maintained and some possibly overgrown (closer to nature!). Expect rocks (boulders, gravel, slanted bedrock, steep stairs), muddy spots, and tall, wet ferns and grass. Additional: Overall, you can expect a diversity of hiking terrain in the Great North Woods with rocky trails, alpine meadows, logging roads, and dense wet forests. Our high point is over 5,000 feet. Once we're well into the backcountry, you can expect to see no more than a group or two of other hikers per day on some trails (but more wildlife spotting), and more hikers on the more popular scenic trails. BE PREPARED We will provide a detailed pack list, itinerary, and directions to meet our guides after registration. Gear will be checked prior to backpacking. Besides personal gear, participants will also be required to carry part of the group's food. Guides constantly assess conditions and make decisions to ensure safety, fun, and learning. Using awareness skills as a team, as well as having a survival attitude and flexible thinking as an individual, will ensure your group's chance of reaching their goals. GETTING HERE Gorham, NH, is about a 2-hour drive from Portland International Jetport (PWM) in Maine, a 2.25-hour drive from Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT), and a 3-hour drive from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS).
