Bring
Backpack, favorite energy snacks, reusable water bottle (filled), proper footwear, spare clothes & shoes, and wear layers of synthetic or wool clothing for the season (no cotton). Seasonal items: sun/bug protection, snow spikes for slippery terrain, swim suit/towel. Additional items may be needed (rentals available). See listings. |

January 2, 2016 Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing in the Great North Woods Location: Milan, New Hampshire Rentals: X-C Ski Package $15; Snowshoes $14 Description: Cross country ski lesson and tour, and a snowshoe hike in the Northern Forest. A winter picnic with hot soup and apple cider is included. Chance of seeing moose, snowshoe hare, pine martin, spruce grouse, and great gray owl. February 27, 2016 Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing at Squam Mountains Location: Holderness, New Hampshire Rentals: X-C Ski Package $15; Snowshoes $14 Description: Cross country ski lesson and tour, and a snowshoe hike in the Squam Mountains. A winter picnic with hot soup and apple cider is included. Experience winter habitats and views of Squam Lake at the foothills of the White Mountains. March 12, 2016 Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing in Mount Washington Valley Location: North Conway, New Hampshire Rentals: X-C Ski Package $15; Snowshoes $14 Description: Cross country ski lesson and tour, and a snowshoe hike in the Mount Washington Valley. A winter picnic with hot soup and apple cider is included. Scenic tours along the Saco River with mountain views.

Introduction to Hiking on the Cohos Trail Location: Stark, New Hampshire Rentals: Backpack $15 Description: This is an educational hike for beginners. Learn and experience the basics of trekking safely into the Northern Forest while hiking a segment of the newest long trail in New Hampshire--the Cohos Trail. The following topics will be addressed: Trip planning & preparedness, wilderness ethics and low-impact practices, staying healthy and found, the 10 essentials of survival, recognizing emergencies, trail surface & elevation considerations, wildlife encounters, and developing an awareness of conditions such as weather, environmental hazards, and personal abilities and limitations. July 22, 2016 Note: This is a Friday Canoeing Lake Chocorua & Gentle Nature Hike Location: Tamworth, New Hampshire Rentals: Canoe/Paddle/PFD $20 per person Prerequisite: Participants must know how to swim. Description: A canoe lesson (safety and equipment orientation, paddle strokes, navigation, rescue techniques, communication); nature walk; animal tracking and signs; birdwatching and other wildlife observation; the legend of Mount Chocorua, survival tips; and backcountry skills lessons such as map reading and emergency tarp shelter building. August 6, 2016 Whitewater/Quickwater Kayaking on the Androscoggin Location: Dummer, New Hampshire Rentals: Solo Kayak/Paddle/PFD $35--we use sit-on-top kayaks with thigh straps Prerequisite: Participants must know how to swim. Description: A kayak lesson on quickwater and up to Class II or III whitewater (safety and equipment orientation, paddle strokes, navigation, rescue techniques, communication), birdwatching and other wildlife spotting, local forest history talk, and swimming. September 17, 2016 Target Archery & Mountain Biking in White Mountains Region Location: Conway, New Hampshire Rentals: Mountain Bike $30 Description: A day of lessons in target archery and mountain biking on double and single track. October 15, 2016 Hiking & Outdoor Photography in Crawford Notch Location: Crawford Notch, Hart's Location, New Hampshire Description: Autumn hike with tips and opportunities for outdoor photography. November 12, 2016 Basic Survival Skills in Franconia Notch Note: Today's event runs from 8am - 5pm Location: Lincoln, New Hampshire Description: Do you want to get into nature (or know someone who does)? Could you handle an emergency and survive in the outdoors? With this course you will learn what to do if you are lost, how to build a shelter, make a fire, signal for help, purify water, get your own food, and how to recognize and treat hypothermia. Includes cooking your own lunch outdoors and map & compass skills. This hands-on workshop is geared for those women and girls who wish to spend time outdoors in any season in New England, particularly in the mountain and river areas of the Northern Forest. This could be the beginning (or refresher) for a lifelong recreation activity such as hiking, birdwatching, canoeing, snowshoeing, and backcountry skiing. Bring/Wear: Backpack, favorite energy snacks, reusable water bottle (filled), proper footwear (hiking boots), spare clothes & shoes, and layers of synthetic or wool clothing for the season, including waterproof outer layer. What to Expect: Spending the day outdoors, paced with a healthy balance of some walking around in the woods and lots of learning how to use tools, knowledge, and other resources while building, making, and doing things, individually and as a team. December 17, 2016 Winter Hiking & Animal Tracking Hemenway State Park Location: Tamworth, New Hampshire Description: Hike an interpretive trail, go off trail looking for tracks and signs of winter birds and mammals (and maybe spot some!), climb a fire tower to see spectacular views, and learn winter hiking and survival tips. |
