January 16-17, 2016 Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing in the Great North Woods Location: Milan, New Hampshire Overnight: Heated lodging. Snowshoes (rental $22) Description: Guided tours and lessons on trails and in the backcountry deep into moose territory. February 13-14, 2016 Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing at Squam Mountains Location: Holderness, New Hampshire Overnight: Heated lodging Price: $275 plus rentals Gear/Equipment Needed: X-C Skis/Boots/Poles (rental $35). April 23-24, 2016 Introduction to Backpacking & North Woods Survival Skills Location: Holderness, New Hampshire (Lakes Region) Overnight: Remote Camping Price: $275 Description: Want to learn how to go camping in the wilderness? Could you handle an emergency and survive in the outdoors? This jam-packed, hands-on learning experience, facilitated by our professional guides, will add a life-long skill set for you to enjoy future excursions into the wild places of the Northern Forest, which stretches around the northern hemisphere. With low-impact trekking and camping practices in mind, participants will learn how to plan, prepare, and implement an overnight hiking trip using the tools, skills, and knowledge to help you stay healthy and found. Activities: Put together a survival kit to take with you on future outdoor adventures. Learn how to read a topographic map and use a map and compass together for route planning. Discover the best ways to choose and pack your backpack. Explore various leadership and followship roles within the hiking group. Learn about the 10 essentials of survival, as well as weather, environmental hazards, common injuries, and illnesses--including how to recognize and treat hypothermia. Learn about knife safety, purifying water, and setting up a tent. Practice useful knots and building a proper fire for emergencies. Learn how to use a camp stove and cook hearty meals. Gear/Equipment Needed (Full pack list will be provided.): Waterproof hiking boots, insulated in winter. Snowshoes and/or snow spikes in winter. Large backpack. Sleeping bag (rated for the season) and insulated sleeping pad required for overnighting in either natural shelter or tents. Description: A great experience for beginner hikers to discover what an overnight remote camping experience is all about. June 2016 No event scheduled July 19-10, 2016 Canoe Camping on Lake Umbagog Location: Errol, New Hampshire (Great North Woods) Overnight: Camping Price: $195 plus rentals Rentals: Canoe $38 per person, set of 3 drybags $30 Description: Enter the Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge by canoe to see moose and loons in their natural habitat. From your campsite you'll also hear loons and see the Milky Way on a clear night. August 27-28, 2016 Fun Whitewater Kayak Camping on the Androscoggin River Location: Errol, New Hampshire (Great North Woods) Overnight: Camping Price: $175 plus rentals Rentals: Kayak $60--we use sit-on-top kayaks with thigh straps Description: With dependable water levels all summer, this area is a great opportunity to try some "Yee-ha" thrilling whitewater with our stable, fun, sit-on-top kayaks. The progressive lessons allow time for practice to master skills. September 24-25, 2016 Cycling & Hiking the Boreal Forest; Target Archery Location: Errol, New Hampshire (Great North Woods) Overnight: Camping Price: $225 plus rentals Rentals: Mountain Bike/Helmet $80 Description: See beautiful autumn colors during two days of adventures and camp under the dark, starry sky of the Northern Forest. Mountain bike a gentle gravel road into the Great North Woods along a mountain stream where you can take a dip to cool off. Hike even deeper into the boreal forest to see a view of the White Mountains in New Hampshire as well as peaks in Vermont, Maine and Canada. Also learn or practice target archery. Price: $275 Gear/Equipment Needed: Day pack ($15 rental) and insulated/waterproof hiking boots. Description: This is 2 days of educational hikes for beginners and stay overnight in a heated yurt. Learn and experience the basics of trekking safely into the Northern Forest while hiking in the eastern slopes of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. The following topics will be addressed: Trip planning & preparedness, wilderness ethics and low-impact practices, staying healthy and found, the 10 essentials of survival, recognizing emergencies, trail surface & elevation considerations, wildlife encounters, and developing an awareness of conditions such as weather, environmental hazards, and personal abilities and limitations. |
