SOLO’s Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course is the recognized industry standard for those who work as backcountry trip leaders, camp counselors, mountain guides, river guides, and ski patrollers.
WHO IS THE WFR COURSE FOR?
The WFR is the perfect course for anyone working in a position of leadership in an outdoor setting or for individuals who want a high level of wilderness medical training for extended personal backcountry trips or expeditions.
WHAT IS TAUGHT?
The WFR is 72+ hours long (9 days for this particular course), and is a comprehensive and in-depth look at the standards and skills of dealing with: Response and Assessment, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Environmental Emergencies and Survival Skills, Soft Tissue Injuries, and Medical Emergencies. Although these appear to be the same basic topics covered in our two-day WFA course, they are covered far more extensively, and there is much more hands-on practice. Additional topics, such as CPR, are also included.
WHERE AND WHEN IS IT HELD?
Outdoor Escapes New Hampshire, LLC is hosting it at Camp Calumet in West Ossipee, New Hampshire, USA on June 1-9, 2021. First day starts at 8AM. SOLO normally offers the WFR course around the world throughout the year, but Covid restrictions has made availability limited and the wait list is long.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
$795* Day Student - includes tuition, lunches, no lodging (Day students must be 16 years of age.)
*$400 deposit is required when registering for this course. Balance due ($395) at start of course.

Current WFRs who have completed a SOLO-approved WFR course from another program will only be able to recertify through SOLO by taking a SOLO Wilderness First Responder Recertification course.
EDUCATIONAL/FUNCTIONAL JOB REQUIREMENTS FOR WILDERNESS MEDICAL STUDENTS AND PROVIDERS
Wilderness First Responder and Wilderness EMT are job-training programs leading to certifications. Based on the Department of Transportation’s First Responder and EMT curriculums, the WFR and WEMT programs integrate wilderness and medical training. Please read all requirements before registering for a course.
DOES THE WFR COUNT AS CONTINUING EDUCATION?
The WFR typically counts as continuing education credits, although it may depend on what certification you have. Street EMTs who take the WFR course may become certified as Wilderness EMTs.
This course is currently scheduled to run as an in-person training. Please be aware, with the ever-changing information that we receive from the CDC, WHO, government, and state officials, this course may need to be postponed or changed to a different format. We will contact you directly with any updates that pertain to your course.
This wilderness medical training consists of didactic and practical skills. During didactic lessons, students will be separated in the classroom. Group sizes are smaller to support this. However, where the appropriate assessment of patients requires physically touching a patient, there is always the potential of risk in doing so. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are requiring students to take additional precautions throughout the course. Students (patients and rescuers) MUST wear PPE during ANY hands-on work. With these additional requirements, we are working to reduce the risk that is present. In taking the training, you understand the associated risks are similar to coming across a patient in the backcountry.
Expect full days of classes.
For practical work, students are paired with one person, and one person only. These people will work together during practical sessions/assessments and otherwise will be expected to remain separated during class. The pair will remain the same from day one through the end of the course.
